After being found unresponsive with a dangerous dose of painkillers in her system, suspicion quickly turned to two familiar faces; fiery Ella Forster, who clashed with Chas hours earlier, and shady John Sugden, who just happened to be first on the scene with a heroic rescue.

John the Manipulator?
After Chas was found unconscious in the back of the Woolpack, John Sugden happened to be the first one on the scene. He administered first aid, called for help, and ended up looking like the hero. But fans aren’t convinced this was all a coincidence.

Plenty of fans are convinced this was an attempt to worm his way into the Dingle family. With John Sugden in a relationship with Aaron, and his mother, Chas openly disliking and not trusting John, fans think it is plausible that he created the whole situation. As one fan put it “John Sugden definitely has some weird hero complex going on. Swooping in to save Aaron, now Chas? It’s a pattern.”
John Sugden previously helped cover up Ruby’s murder of her father by helping dispose of Anthony’s body. John Sugden is definitely hiding something more sinister under the surface. John Sugden is currently the 2/1 favourite to be behind Chas’s collapse, and it is no surprise considering his hero antics, timing, and shady past.
Who Poisoned Chas?
Suspect | Odds | Probability |
---|---|---|
John | 7/4 | 36.4% |
Ella | 7/2 | 22.2% |
Nobody - Addiction | 5/1 | 16.7% |
Liam | 13/2 | 13.3% |
Nobody - Illness | 7/1 | 12.5% |
Joe | 8/1 | 11.1% |
Aaron | 16/1 | 5.9% |
Ella - The Obvious Suspect
Ella Forster was the first one to be accused and questioned following Chas’s collapse. If you asked around the village, the majority would say she is guilty. She was seen arguing with Chas just hours before, spotted near the scene, and Chas’s engagement ring fell out of her purse when confronted by her ex, now Chas’s fiancé, Liam.

Within hours the police had arrested Ella Forster for questioning after Liam went to Aaron and John Sugden about what he found out. Plus, she was sacked from the surgery and branded the psycho-ex who couldn’t let go.
As one fan on Reddit put it: “Too obvious. It’s always the one they want you to suspect.” Still, Ella Forster has odds of 7/2 to be the poisoner, mainly due to her possible motive and access to medicine.
Liam, her ex and main accuser is the fourth favourite on 13/2. If he did it, fans believe it was more likely to be an accident. Still recovering from a head injury, Liam had full access to Chas’s prescriptions and may have altered her dosage without realising it.
A Curveball in the Mix
Surprises are common in the world of soaps, and Emmerdale is no exception. A couple of other characters could also be in the mix.
First up is Joe, one fan on Reddit speculated that Joe could have been testing the dose on Chas, enough to bring her down without killing her, before he targets Caleb. This would not be a far stretch, considering his plan to harvest Caleb’s kidney to save himself. He has odds of 8/1 of being behind Chas’s collapse.
Some fans noted that Aaron was very quick to back Liam and John Sugden’s accusation against Ella Forster. Could he be secretly behind the attempted poisoning of his own mother and more than happy to see Ella Forster take the fall? On odds of 16/1, despite the sometimes strained relationship, he is definitely a wildcard in the mystery.
Or Was It Nobody at All?
Not every Emmerdale twist involves a villain, could it be that the village is turning on each other over nothing?
Some fans noted that Chas has been picking up her medication more often than before. Since her involvement in the limo crash, she has been taking pain medication to help with her back.
This is seen as a strong outside possibility, with odds of 5/1.
Could it be a medical issue after all? Chas recently was given the all-clear from cancer and some fans think it could have returned, with the reason for her persistent back pain being stage 4 cancer. Odds of this are on 7/1, with it as less likely than an addiction, but not impossible.
With the village so far convinced it is Ella Forster, but fan suspicions still swirling, one thing is for sure, some more surprises in this mystery are still in store.
