Summer Olympics 2024 Medalists

States with the Most Medalists

The biggest states naturally should have the largest talent pool, and produce the most winners. Of the top 10 states in medalists, only Indiana and New Jersey are outside the top 10 in population. Showing that these states punch above their weight in Olympic performance.

States with the Most Medalists

These rankings show that smaller states have fewer total medalists. But, they often produce Olympians at a higher rate when adjusted for population, one medalists from a smaller state like Delaware or Vermont makes a huge difference compared to one for California, Texas, or New York.

Jordan Chiles was cruelly bumped from the bronze medal position, but since she also won a medal as part of a team, her removal from the individual bronze medal slot did not affect her home state of Oregon.

Factors Influencing Success

Several factors help to explain why some states perform better on a per capita basis in producing Summer Olympic medalists:

  • Access to Facilities
States with quality sports facilities, even in smaller communities, provide athletes the resources they need to excel. For example, Washington, D.C., and Delaware, though small, offer specialized training facilities that rival those in larger states.
  • State Investment
Investing in sports programs, especially at the community and school levels, is crucial. So, states like Vermont and Alaska have local programs. They help find and grow talent from an early stage.
  • Community Support
In smaller states, local athletes are a source of pride. So, local communities support them more.
  • Quality Coaching
States with high-quality coaches saw big gains in athletic performance, regardless of population. These coaches were either drawn to the state by incentive programs or developed from within. Nevada was highlighted with an accumulation of some of the best coaches in the nation in multiple sports.

Methodology

We looked at the place of birth of all Team USA medalists. If their place of birth was unavailable, we used “hometown” as per the Team USA website.

For team medals, we counted every team member as a medalist, meaning that the total number of medalists in our statistics is higher than Team USA won in the final medals table.

We calculated it based on total number of medalists, if an athlete won more than 1 medal, as part of a team and/or individually, they were only counted once.

Some of the athletes for Team USA were born overseas, these were excluded from the statistics.
