Top Festivus Complaints of the Year

What Is Festivus?

Introduced in season 9, episode 10 of Seinfeld, Festivus is a holiday “for the rest of us” as an alternative to the commercial, forced cheerfulness of the season. Celebrated on December 23, its hallmark traditions include the unadorned aluminum pole, feats of strength, and most notably, the airing of grievances - an opportunity to vent frustrations and share the many ways people have disappointed you over the year.

This quirky anti-holiday has since transcended the sitcom, becoming a cultural phenomenon.

The Top Festivus Complaints

"I got a lot of problems with you people! And now you’re gonna hear about it!" - Frank Costanza

Since airing grievances is the very soul of Festivus, we’ve gathered some of the most relatable complaints of 2024. Some would drive George Costanza into one of his signature meltdowns, while others are minor annoyances.

1. Tech Updates That Ruin the Moment

George Costanza was always a man on the edge - mostly due to everyday inconveniences. Imagine his rage in today’s world of “smart” devices that constantly need updates… or fail when you need them most.

George would likely hurl his phone into the ocean, much like he did with that ill-fated answering machine tape, seething with frustration.

Top complaint: "Why does my phone update right when I need to Google the nearest bagel place?!"

2. Kindness for Clout on Social Media

Filming kind acts for social media likes is a trend that would undoubtedly baffle the entire Seinfeld gang. Imagine Kramer trying to stage a "random act of kindness" gone wrong - complete with awkward camera angles and unnecessary commentary.

Top complaint: "Are you helping someone, or just helping your follower count?"

3. Subscription Fatigue, Now Everything’s Pay-to-Play

Kramer’s entrepreneurial spirit would be in full swing if he lived in 2024. He’d probably try to start a subscription-free streaming service called “KramerVision” or an online store selling “gently used” USB cables.

Top complaint: "Why is everything a subscription now? I just wanted to watch one show!"

4. Endless Remakes of Beloved Classics

Everything old is new again - but should it be? Seinfeld fans know some originals should be untouched in a world of endless reboots and sequels.

Top complaint: "Not everything needs a reboot... leave the classics alone!"

5. Packaging You Open at Your Own Risk

We’ve all been there - staring at impenetrable plastic packaging that seems designed to test patience. Whether it’s scissors, a knife, or sheer brute force, nothing seems to work. George Costanza would likely throw the package across the room in frustration, cursing the designers who thought this was a good idea.

Top complaint: “I ordered a phone case and needed a blowtorch to open the package.”

6. Microsoft Teams Troubles

Microsoft Teams is the ultimate digital test of patience. The dreaded ringtone echoing through a full house, the "You’re muted" reminders that never end, and calls where everyone talks over each other make for prime Festivus material. Frank Costanza, after hearing another notification would probably slam his fist down and yell: "SERENITY NOW!" (Season 9, Episode 3).

Top complaint: "Why does Microsoft Teams sound like it’s announcing the end of the world every time someone calls?!"

7. Speakerphone Shenanigans in Public

Few things disrupt public spaces like people using speakerphones in quiet places. Imagine sitting behind someone on a loud business call at a diner, their phone blaring for the entire meal. George Costanza would lose it within five minutes.

Top complaint: "Why does your entire call need to be my problem too?!"

8. Influencer Oversharing On Social Media

Elaine Benes would probably love social media, just not the endless influencer oversharing. Imagine her rolling her eyes at perfectly staged vacation pics or unnecessary meal updates. It’s easy to picture Elaine furiously scrolling shouting: "Fake, Fake, Fake, Fake!” like she did to Jerry in Season 5, Episode 1.

Top complaint: "Why do I know what my old coworker’s cat had for breakfast...every day?!"

9. Everyone’s an Expert: Uninformed Opinions

Jerry Seinfeld has always been quick to judge, usually with minimal research or context. In 2024, he’d be surrounded by half-baked hot takes and uninformed opinions plastered across social media.

Top complaint: "Is everyone an expert now, or are they just repeating what they heard someone else say?"

10. QR Codes Instead Of Paper Menus

For those who just want to sit down and order a meal, QR code menus can feel like an unnecessary obstacle. Imagine George Costanza’s frustration as he fumbles with his phone, struggling to load the menu while hungry and annoyed. The idea of replacing physical menus with digital ones might sound modern, but for many, it’s just another hassle.

Top complaint: “I just wanted a menu, not a digital scavenger hunt!”

Sources And Methodology

Complaints were identified through a systematic analysis of user-generated content from Reddit and X (Twitter). On Reddit, we analyzed highly upvoted threads within the r/AskReddit community, selecting only those with a minimum of 500 responses to ensure a broad range of input. For X, we analyzed thousands of tweets containing relevant keywords and hashtags related to the holidays using sentiment analysis to identify recurring frustrations.
